Auto Crop a Document Photo Online: Free Scanner With Edge Detection

You hold the phone over a bill, a mark sheet or a signed form, tap the shutter, and what you get back is nothing like a scan. The page is tilted. One corner is further from the lens than the other, so the rectangle has turned into a wedge. Half the desk is in the frame, and your own shadow is lying across the paper. Send that on WhatsApp and the person at the other end has to pinch and rotate just to read it.

An auto crop scanner fixes all four problems in one pass: it finds where the page actually is, straightens the perspective so the corners are square again, throws away the background, and evens out the lighting so the paper looks white instead of grey.

What "auto crop" actually does

It is worth knowing the difference between plain cropping and what a scanner does, because they produce very different results.

• Cropping cuts a rectangle out of your photo. If the page was tilted, the crop is still tilted — you have only removed some background.
• Edge detection finds the four corners of the document inside the photo, wherever they happen to be.
• Perspective correction stretches those four corners back into a true rectangle. This is the step that makes a photo look like a scan rather than a photo.
• Enhancement removes the shadow gradient, pushes the paper to white and sharpens the text.

Only the last three together give you a document. That is why a photo cropped in the phone gallery app still looks like a photo.

How to scan a document in five steps

1. Open the Auto Crop Scanner and choose a photo, or take one with the camera button.
2. The four edges are detected automatically and shown as a blue outline. If a corner is off, drag it — a magnifier appears so your fingertip does not hide the corner you are placing. Dragging a side moves that whole edge.
3. Press Next: Enhance.

Which filter should you use?

Getting a better photo in the first place

Detection is only as good as the photo you give it. A few habits make almost every scan come out right the first time:

• Contrast the background. A white page on a white table has no edge to find. Put light paper on something dark, and a dark card on something light.
• Get all four corners in frame, with a little margin. A corner touching the edge of the photo cannot be detected as a corner.
• Shoot from directly above. Perspective correction handles a tilt, but the further you lean, the more the far edge blurs and stretches.
• Move your shadow out of the way. Side light from a window beats overhead light with you standing under it.
• Flatten folds. A crease across the page bends the text; no amount of correction unbends it.

Choosing the page shape

The Page shape setting decides the proportions of the finished scan. Leave it on Auto and the shape is worked out from the corners you set. Pick a preset when you know what the document is and want it exact:

• A4 sheet — letters, forms, certificates, most Indian office paper (210 × 297 mm).
• A5 sheet — half-sheet bills, receipts and booklets.
• US Letter — documents from American systems.
• ID card — Aadhaar, PAN, NID, driving licence and other CR80 cards (85.6 × 54 mm).

Presets are useful because a photo taken at an angle never gives perfectly true proportions. Telling the tool "this is an A4 sheet" removes the last bit of distortion.

Scanning several pages into one PDF

A single page is fine as a JPG. Anything longer should be a PDF, because a PDF stays in order and opens as one attachment.

In the scanner, finish the first page, then press Add page in the Pages strip and shoot the next one. Each page keeps its own crop and its own filter, so a colour certificate and a black-and-white form can sit in the same file. When the strip is complete, press Download PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install an app?

No. The scanner runs on the website in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. On a phone, the camera button opens the camera directly.

Is the scan free?

Yes. Free use is subject to a daily limit per tool for visitors who are not signed in; a subscription removes the limit.

What happens to my document?

The photo is processed on the server to do the detection and enhancement, and the working copy used while you adjust the crop is cleaned up automatically after a few hours. Do not upload documents you are not comfortable sending over the internet.

The edges were not detected. What now?

Drag the four corners yourself — the result is identical, detection only saves you the dragging. Detection struggles most when the document and the surface behind it are a similar shade, or when a corner falls outside the photo. Use Whole photo if you want to keep everything and only fix the lighting.

Can I scan a book page?

Yes, but hold the page as flat as you can. Perspective correction assumes the document is a flat rectangle; a curved page near the spine will still bow after correction.

Why is my scan smaller than the original photo?

The scan is cropped to the document, so the pixels that were desk or floor are gone. A page that filled half the photo produces roughly half the pixels — which is why filling the frame with the document gives sharper text.
